Sports wagering has been legal in Canada for decades. Single event sports betting in Canada is a huge business, but only $450 million is wagered legally in Canada. It is estimated that in excess of $10 billion annually is bet illegally through bookies run by organized crime, and an additional $4 billion is bet through offshore internet sites that are not regulated by Canadian provincial gaming regulators. Eight provinces support Bill C290. The Federal Minister of Justice has received letters from the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, requesting that the Criminal Code be amended to permit single event sports wagering. The provinces of Quebec, PEI, and New Brunswick have also indicated support for the amendment.
Bill C290 received all party support in the House of Commons
